A reason to
hope—The Alzheimer's Association is the
world leader in private funding for Alzheimer's research and
support.
Not long ago, little was known about Alzheimer's disease. There was
no clear way to diagnose the disease, no medications to treat it,
and very little research about it. People with the disease and their
caregivers had few resources for information and support.
Today a network of scientists, health care professionals, and
industry leaders is working to collaborate with the Alzheimer's
Association to understand the mysteries of Alzheimer's; develop a
cure or treatments; and find better ways to support and care for
those who are affected by its symptoms. Incredible progress is being
made every day, advancing knowledge about the disease. There is new
reason to hope and abundant reason to change the way we think about
Alzheimer's.
We still do not know what causes Alzheimer's disease and we do not
anticipate a cure anytime soon. However, for the first time, there
is growing evidence that we will be able to intervene in the disease
process to limit its disabling effects and related cost. There are
different theories to the mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease and
ways to treat it. Scientific developments in 2004 added major
insights to our growing body of knowledge.
The Western and Central Washington State Chapter is active in
supporting the advancement of research to improve the quality of
life for individuals with Alzheimer's and their caregivers and most
importantly to find a cure. |
